Installation Feature

<< The Birds & The Bees >>

This is a bit delayed, but we wanted to share photos of Elsbeth's "The Birds & The Bees" installation. It's so stunning in person, so hopefully the photos do it justice! It is on display now in the perfect setting of Hive & Hum here in Santa Cruz, CA.  Hive & Hum is a new shop and you must stop in if you are ever in the area, we love this perfectly curated shop big time!

The taxidermy birds are ethically sourced and created by the talented Blinking Eyes Taxidermy in collaboration with Elsbeth.  The honey comb is made using real bee's wax and painted by hand.  If you are interested in pricing and purchasing, or looking for a custom creation, please email us at Info@WildAbandon.Design, or use the Contact Us form.

This hive installation was created for an editorial photoshoot, which took place in July. For the moment the editorial is secret, but once it's released, we can't wait to share it with you here.  But for now you can stop by Hive & Hum and get a hit of magic in person.

Here is the thing about my dreams: they are crazy vivid. I can remember specific details and feelings for days after particularly vivid episodes. Sometimes it can be scary, but sometimes my friends... sometimes it is magical. There are certain dreams that I can make come true, that I can make real.

I had dreamt of a wild beehive, heavy and huge with honey, being surrounded by hovering bright birds that were building the hive themselves. In the dream it felt like the hive was throbbing like a heart, but it was the energy that the birds were putting into the hive as they were building it that created the sensations of a heartbeat. This dream stuck with me, haunting my thoughts, and I knew I had to make it. The birds were the trickiest part especially since I needed them to be in flight and hovering in space. Luckily I was able to find a extremely talented taxidermist to help me make real the image in my mind.

I wanted to make this piece something that could be installed in many settings: in a store front, over an event table spread, in a home over a sofa, or hung in a window. I love creating pieces that bring intrigue and wonderment in to a space, something that engages the mind and heart. I hope this piece touches people like it did me.
